Dele Alli is the darling of Tottenham and all of the English Premier League as his two headed goals at the end of the first half and early in the second half ensured that Chelsea
Antonio Conte’s team would have blamed themselves for an insipid performance with the way they conceded the two goals. Tottenham go above Arsenal on the table with Chelsea’s lead cut to five points.
First Half
The two tightest defenses were on show and it showed because it took additional time in first half stoppage before the game saw its first shot on target and it produced the first goal.
Eden Hazard should have given Chelsea the lead on five minutes from a dinked pass from Nemanja Matic but the Belgian dragged his left-footed shot across Hugo Lloris and wide of the far post.
On 10 minutes, Moussa Dembele slipped past both N’Golo Kante and Matic but Thibaut Courtois claimed his pass to Harry Kane. David Luiz then had to hurry across to make a crucial tackle on Danny Rose, who was freed on goal by a pass from Jan Vertonghen.
Tottenham were getting more of the second balls and showing more energy with their press. Pedro was the first recipient of a yellow card when he upended Rose for an easy call for Martin Atkinson.
Diego Costa had words with Pedro on 22 minutes as Chelsea broke on the counter after the former Barcelona man could not get on the end of a pass that was intended for him. Christian Eriksen then tried to test Courtois but his shot was just marginally wide.
But with the game coasting and waiting for the referee’s whistle, Kyle Walker broke forward, left the ball for Eriksen, who delivered a peach of a cross which Dele Alli headed past Courtois.
Second half
Chelsea came on to the pitch a bit earlier than their hosts and they started on the front foot. Costa forced Llloris into a good save. Two minutes later, Victor Moses had a shout for a penalty, when Dembele tripped him but Atkinson waved play on.
Spurs went forward and again Eriksen and Alli connected as Cesar Azpilicueta and Moses were caught floundering by Alli, who headed past Courtois.
Conte threw on Willian for Marcos Alonso as Pedro went to right wing-back. Spurs with their tails up held on to possession with Chelsea unable to get their passing game as they have over the last three months of 2016.
At the end of the match, White Hart Lane became White Hot Lane as Spurs streaked into third place.
