Manchester United will take ‘a lot of risks’ next season.

André Onana has warned Manchester United fans to expect Erik ten Hag’s team to take significantly more risks next season.

Onana has occasionally gotten himself into problems by attempting to play out of the back. However, the goalie has cautioned supporters that he would be risking even more when the new season begins, and they should brace themselves for high-risk, high-reward football.

“It’s what you’re going to see this season because I will take a lot of risks,” Onana told reporters.

“I can already tell you. Be prepared, for it will happen this season, trust me. I’ll love it even more once the season starts.”

United hired goalkeeper coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar this summer as part of an overhaul of Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff. Ten Rouwelaar has arrived from Ajax to replace Richard Hartis and help the squad build from the back, which is an important element of Ten Hag’s philosophy and one of the reasons Onana was brought in to replace previous No. 1 David de Gea last year.

“The best teams in the world take risks,” Onana explained. “Building from the back, recognize things, scenarios; when the opponent leaps one on one, or when they press with three or four, recognize that we dominate the pressuring whether it’s a No. 9 or No. 11.

“For me, it’s critical to detect such situations and make the greatest option for the team. I’ll take on a lot of responsibility, and I believe my back is big enough to bear it all, right? I hope it’ll be good this season.”

Following his arrival from Inter Milan last summer, Onana’s debut season at Old Trafford was marked by ups and downs. He produced several outstanding saves, but he also made a number of blunders, particularly in the Champions League, where United were eliminated in the group stages.

The 28-year-old expects a more consistent season after adjusting into life in Manchester, but says he’s willing to take criticism if it comes his way.

“Being a player for Manchester United, when you don’t win, it’s fair to receive criticism because at the end of the day, it’s part of the job,” he told reporters.

“We are here for it, and with me coming here as the best goalie in the world, it’s understandable that they were tough on me because they expect so much from me, but they also show me a lot of affection.

“You just have to balance that and critics sometimes are good because you have to look back at what you did that was not good, so for me I take it positively.”
