Brentford’very thrilled’ as Fábio Carvalho completes his move from Liverpool

Liverpool is still looking for Martín Zubimendi, a Spanish midfielder, despite not having made any signings this summer. Real Sociedad has informed the 25-year-old that if he decides to quit his boyhood club, he must force a move to Anfield and pay his own €60 million (£51 million) release clause at the La Liga offices in Madrid.

Fábio Carvalho has finalized his move from Liverpool to Brentford for a sum that could reach £27.5 million.

This summer, numerous Premier League clubs, notably Southampton and Leicester City, expressed interest in the attacking midfielder. Only Brentford reached Liverpool’s valuation of the 21-year-old, and the transaction was finalized on Monday for an initial £22.5 million plus £5 million in add-ons.

Liverpool will also get 17.5% of any future sell-on fees. His previous club, Fulham, receives 20% of the Brentford cost as part of Carvalho’s £5 million transfer to Liverpool in 2022.

The Portuguese player spent last season on loan at RB Leipzig and Hull after struggling to get consistent playing time under previous Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.

Arne Slot, the club’s new manager, was impressed by Carvalho during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, but Brentford’s bid, which was significantly more than Southampton’s £15 million offer, was one that Liverpool felt couldn’t be turned down.

Thomas Frank, Brentford’s head coach, told the club’s website: “Fábio is a player with many characteristics. He can play any of the front three or four positions in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. His best position is either No. 10 or coming in from the left.

“Offensively, he has excellent ball skills: he can get past opponents, slide a pass, create opportunities, and finish them. He’s the type of guy we don’t have many of in the roster, so he’ll give us that extra edge.

“His abilities and approach for working hard under duress is also quite good. This is in addition to him hitting all of the cultural boxes and being the correct character. So we’re thrilled to have him come in and propel the team forward.”

Manchester City transferred Argentina World Cup winner Julián Álvarez to Atlético Madrid for €95 million (£81.5 million), setting a Premier League record. The La Liga club will pay an initial £64.4 million for the striker, with a possible £17.1 million in add-ons based on various terms.

Álvarez, who scored 36 goals in 103 games for City, becomes the second-most expensive signing in Atlético’s history, after João Félix, who is of interest to both Aston Villa and Chelsea. Álvarez scored 19 goals to help City win the league for the fourth consecutive season under Pep Guardiola.
